The Tottenham defender found the net twice as Spurs prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past the Spurs keeper from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the referee ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and table-toppers the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and sit half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in role at both ends of the field

After a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, Frank opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back the Dutchman converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an free the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - notched his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defence, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

The club's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the novelty may have faded somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their attacking woes will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had scored only one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor record on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, failed to make an impact after replacing Beto in the second half.

It was not for a lack of chance. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
