Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Injections Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to original mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and long-term success likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
