Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.

Officers state they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.

The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Police then located many other smeared automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Law enforcement report initial examinations indicate the liquid was likely blood from a person.

"There is still no indication as to where it came from; officials are not yet aware of any injuries in connection with the event," they added.

Local authorities said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.

An important representative stated the vandalism rendered him speechless and had to be addressed promptly.

"This event affects the core of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a assailant focusing on individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
