According to figures provided by Israel, no fewer than 98 detainees from Palestine have perished while in custody since October 2023. Several casualties in confinement have been high profile, such as a middle-aged hospital director who died in detention after a third of a year in custody.

An inmate held with the victim reported that he was brought to the exercise area by guards immediately preceding his death, obviously hurt and unclothed from the hips downward. His corpse has not been returned to Gaza.

Additional detainees who died in confinement by Israeli authorities are unidentified. The prison service and armed services provided investigators with the number of casualties in detention, and basic additional information such as the facility where they lost their lives, but not the inmates’ personal details.

Identification Challenges

Regarding 21 occurrences, primarily people from Gaza, researchers were unable to correlate the minimal data provided by government bodies to a fatality registered by advocacy bodies, via accounts from released detainees or reporting in the press.
